We Bought The Farm!

IMG_3723 (1)After many many weekends of driving around the area looking at different properties, we decided to check out this one farm that we kept passing. It was way over our budget… but what the heck, can’t hurt to look right??  A 125 acre working dairy farm…. there was no way we were doing cows!  And to be honest with you, I have never planted ANYTHING that didn’t die on me!.

Before I go any further, let me say something about the previous farmers… They are hard working people!! They bought a second farm just a  few miles down the road and were maintaining two farms… two DAIRY FARMS! Cows have to be milked 2 times a day and you can not miss a milking. I don’t know how they did it for so long.

The house was in awful shape…. and I mean AWFUL!!! The last owners didn’t have the time to do any upkeep but the property had tremendous potential. We were not really sure what that potential would be…. but it would give us options.

The first time we got out out of the car and started walking up to the house, Egidio looked at the back steps (big bluestone steps, all crooked from settling over time) and said “Get back in the car!”.  I took his hand and asked him “Is there anything you can’t fix?”  He shook his head and we walked into the house…

We walked the property a few times and started negotiating. That was early December. We closed in late August. Do you have any idea what goes into buying a working farm?? I mean other than money. It’s insane!!! And again, we had no real plan.

We had no real plan… but we did have bees. The previous farmer was kind enough to let us set up the bees on the farm before we closed on the property. This was great because it gave us a reason to go to the farm every weekend.

Bees are AMAZING! I love my bees…  Egidio…. not so much. Its almost humorous to see the Chief of Police afraid of a small flying insect.  It created some BUZZ!  (pun intended).
