We made it through the race and were able to get moved into the farm on time. Our first official night there we lost power. Now, losing power at the farm is a little different than losing power in the city of Kingston. I spent the first 47 years of my life living in Kingston and I can count on my fingers how many times we lost power. Other than the weird power outage the summer of 2003, it is usually restored within the hour. Also, in Kingston you are never far from a neighbor and your water source is not dependent on having electricity. As I sat in complete darkness I remember thinking… “What have I done?” My kids on the other hand could not have been happier. They played flashlight tag until I forced them to get in bed. We all piled into one bed with the flashlight on and we talked and giggled until they drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, power was back on and we raced around to get ready. I had pulled my car up to the side of the house the night before and I was unpacking boxes as the kids got dressed. Finally with backpacks on, I gathered my littles and we headed for the car. Parker opened the side door and suddenly everyone froze…. This bad boy was about 20 feet from the door. He had the same shocked look on his face as my kids had on theirs. You have to remember…. we are city folk! You don’t open your door in Kingston and expect to see a black bear. We slammed the door and watched is this guy as he casually walked down the yard and crossed 209 to the creek. He apparently wanted some fish for breakfast.
So what do kids do when they see an animal in their yard… they name him. This guy is officially Boo Boo.
During the first two weeks at the farm Boo Boo was seen several times en route to the creek. We then started clearing and burning some brush and cutting down trees. I think Boo Boo was displaced during this process because we didnt see him for several weeks. This picture was recently taken of Boo Boo in the back of the farm where we think he now roams.
Here the thing about Boo Boo………………….. Boo Boo has got to go!
I know what you are thinking… “He is more afraid of you then you are of him”….. “He is a beautiful animal”….. “Its his home that you moved into”……..
BLAH..BLAH..BLAH!!!!
Boo Boo HAS GOT TO GO!!!!

I have had black bears in my yard right up to my deck. Yes, they are more afraid of us than we need to be of them. A loud noise or voice telling them to “get out of here” will usually send them on their way. Of course there is an exception. If they are with cubs or as in my case, enjoying some of my bird food, they may not react as you want. When that happens I just take their picture for future reference.
