“Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen from their…..nonsense!

mailboxAs you know…. we bought the farm. Before we moved in we noticed that the mailbox was across the street from our house. Every other house on the street has the mailbox on the house side of the street. The area that our farm is located on 209 has a curve… and the speed limit is 55. I know a lot of people have to cross the street to get the mail, or go down the road a bit… no big deal right? Guess again!! I have successfully gotten mail one time. Once! The curve on the road is rather sharp. that means that you really can’t see traffic coming until they are right on top of you…. at 55+ miles an hour… Its INSANE!!! You stand at the side of the road looking left…. okay…all clear, oh wait! Cars coming from the right..oh Damn!! then left..,. Then you run for your life across both lanes and jump over the guide rail as there is ZERO shoulder to stand on. So now you are on a rock embankment on the other side of the street hanging over the Esopus creek. ( In the warm weather looking for snakes). You have to reach your arm around into the mailbox to check for mail or pull it out. You can not possibly stand in front of the mail box and look in it. Then… run back. Its an ordeal! All 6 kids have been forbidden to get the mail.

Since we are planning to widen the driveway entrance to the farm, I decided to contact the Postmaster General to ask what it would take to move the mailbox to our side of the street. We noticed from Google Maps pictures that the mailbox was on our side at one time. Something must have happened. No one in their right mind would move it to the other side without some sort of death wish.  I assumed that the driveway would need to be wide enough to pull the mail truck completely off the road and back on. We will do whatever it takes. I did my research before I called… I wanted to be ready.

Nothing really prepares you for blatant sarcasm from an adult. The Postmaster was rather nasty during our conversation. While he was pointing out that Google Maps didn’t run the post office, I found myself wondering if I really cared that the Post Office was looking at extinction. I decided that I did not! I also decided right then and there to do the “green” thing while aiding this extinction, and go completely paperless. I will not be sending out my typical 100 Christmas cards this year. I’ll send Google cards instead. Perhaps Google DOES run the post office…
